Did you know I can remotely witness your marriage notice over a video call?
Remote witnessing was introduced through the pandemic but is now law so we can witness your NOIM over a Zoom call.
What is the NOIM, and Why Do You Need It?
The Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) is a critical document for getting married in Australia. Think of it as the official “heads-up” to the government that you’re planning to tie the knot. It’s a legal requirement that needs to be lodged with your celebrant at least one month before your wedding day and no more than 18 months prior.
Traditionally, this would mean meeting in person with me to fill out and witness the form. But thanks to updates in the law, this entire process can now happen via a video call like Zoom, FaceTime, or Google Meet—super handy if you’re not in the same city as me or your celebrant (or even on the same side of Bass Strait!).
How Does Remote Witnessing Work?
Here’s how it all goes down, step by step:
- Fill Out the Form. Start by either sending me your information for the paperwork like I would have emailed you about, or downloading the NOIM form from the Australian Government website. Fill in as much as you can—you can even type directly into the PDF. If you’re stuck on something, don’t worry; I’ll guide you through it during our call.
- Get Your Documents Ready. To verify your identity and eligibility to marry, you’ll need to provide original versions of the following documents:
- Photo ID like drivers license or passport.
- Birth certificate or passport (from any country).
- If you’ve been married before, evidence that the previous marriage has ended, such as a divorce certificate or death certificate. Gather these ahead of our meeting and keep them handy.
- Hop on a Video Call. Schedule a video call with me at a time that works for you. During the call:
- I’ll witness you signing the NOIM in real-time.
- You’ll show me your ID documents on camera to confirm your identity.
- I’ll explain anything you’re unsure about and answer your questions.
- Send It Over. After our call, you’ll either:
- Scan and email the signed NOIM to me.
- Post the physical copy to my office address. We’ll sort out the logistics that suit you best.
What Makes Remote Witnessing So Useful?
- Flexibility: You don’t have to find time for an in-person meeting in your busy schedule.
- Accessibility: Whether you’re interstate, in a remote area, or just prefer the convenience, this system is designed to work for you.
- Save on Travel: If you’re planning a destination wedding (say, in stunning Tasmania), you can handle the paperwork without booking flights.
What Do You Need for the Video Call?
- A smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone.
- A stable internet connection.
- Your NOIM form I would have sent you already and original ID documents.
Is This Option Legal?
Absolutely! Remote witnessing of the NOIM is completely legal in Australia, as long as the correct procedures are followed. Your celebrant (hi, that’s me!) is trained to ensure everything is done by the book.
Who Benefits the Most?
- Couples living in different cities from their celebrant, aka if you don’t live in Ranelagh like I do.
- People planning destination weddings, especially in Tasmania or other remote locations.
- Those who appreciate the efficiency and convenience of modern technology like I do!
What Happens Next?
Once the NOIM is lodged with me, you’re officially on the countdown to your wedding day. We’ll work together to plan your ceremony, fine-tune the details, and make sure everything flows smoothly.
If you’re ready to tick the paperwork off your to-do list—or if you just want to chat about your wedding dreams—let’s set up a video call and get the ball rolling. Your wedding journey starts with this one small step, and I’m here to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible. Let’s do this!
