Sarakiniko Beach, Milos

An iconic lunar-like coastline on Milos Island, Greece — perfect for elopements at golden hour, but best shared with just the two of you.

elopement coastal natural wonder

Sarakiniko Beach on the island of Milos is one of the most otherworldly places I’ve ever stood — a stretch of white volcanic rock sculpted by wind and sea, more moon than Mediterranean. It’s not a wedding venue in the traditional sense, but it is a dream European elopement location for couples looking for beauty without walls.

This is a place for just the two of you (and maybe a celebrant and photographer or two). No chairs, no aisle, no shade — just the stark, cinematic cliffs and the endless blue of the Aegean.

My Experience Here

I was lucky to be here in June with The Elopement Collective and photographer George Bowden. We timed everything to capture golden hour and blue hour, aiming for a ceremony 20 minutes before sunset — and it paid off. The light clings to the white rock in ways you can’t describe until you see it.

But be warned: even at sunrise, Sarakiniko is never truly empty. Photo shoots are happening all around, and sunset is even busier. That said, we still found our space, and it was stunning.

Venue Highlights

  • Iconic white volcanic rock formations
  • Easy access by car from most of Milos
  • Surreal coastal landscape that looks like another planet
  • Best light imaginable at golden hour and blue hour
  • Perfect for small, quiet elopements with no guests

Planning Tips

  • Avoid tight clothing — you’ll be climbing and scrambling over big, smooth rocks.
  • Wear proper footwear — grippy soles are essential on the uneven stone.
  • Timing is everything — aim to shoot in the hour before sunset, and plan the ceremony right before the sun dips.
  • Expect company — summer is peak season with lots of tourists and photo shoots. Embrace the chaos or elope in the shoulder season.
  • Access — fly to Milos or catch a ferry from Athens. Then hire a car or arrange a local driver.
  • Restaurants — reservations aren’t a thing in Milos. Go early, wait in line, and enjoy. Medusa is a great nearby option for a celebratory meal.
  • No permits needed — for elopements only. Weddings with guests aren’t a fit for this rugged, wild spot. Choose an actual venue if you need guest seating or accessibility.

What Are Weddings For?

What Are Weddings For?

White dresses, bouquets, bridesmaids and champagne. Fatherly speeches, and I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston. Confetti, corsages, long tables of food. These are a few of my favourite things people think weddings are about.
