garden historic elopement location

Tucked away in one of Rome’s most peaceful parks, the Tempio Gotico is a romantic and hidden gem perfect for an intimate wedding or elopement. Located in the Villa Celimontana gardens—just uphill from the Colosseum—this gothic temple brings old-world charm to the heart of the Eternal City. It’s quiet, private, and radiates that effortlessly iconic Roman beauty, without the crowds.

My Experience Here

I was there with The Elopement Collective at sunrise and it was peaceful, quiet, beautiful, serene, and so special. Highly recommended as a Rome elopement location! Through summer the sun rises behind the temple so you get even shade on the ceremony in the early morning, and dappled light through the afternoon though the park will be beusy in the afternoon.

Venue Highlights

  • Gothic-style temple with a striking silhouette
  • Lush, shaded garden setting ideal for small ceremonies
  • Sunrise light hits the temple beautifully in summer
  • Located close to the Colosseum and other Roman landmarks
  • Easily accessible via Uber or by foot from the historic centre
  • Quiet and peaceful compared to tourist hotspots

Planning Tips

  • Timing is everything: In summer, aim for a sunrise ceremony—the light is magical and the gardens are virtually empty.
  • Access: The easiest way to find the temple is to enter the gardens via the gate across the road from San Giovanni e Paolo (search “Clivo di Scauro”).
  • Transport: I recommend catching an Uber to the gardens, then strolling down to the Colosseum after—makes for a perfect post-ceremony photo walk.
  • Heat & hydration: Rome can be hot in summer. Bring water and wear breathable fabrics if you’re planning a mid-morning celebration.
  • Footwear: Paths are unpaved in places, so opt for comfortable shoes until you’re ready to switch to heels for photos.
  • Privacy: While the temple is in a public park, it’s off the beaten track, making it surprisingly private for such a central location.

What Are Weddings For?

What Are Weddings For?

White dresses, bouquets, bridesmaids and champagne. Fatherly speeches, and I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston. Confetti, corsages, long tables of food. These are a few of my favourite things people think weddings are about.
