Old Mount Stromlo Observatory
Intimate wedding venue among the stars — literally. Just outside Canberra, the Old Mount Stromlo Observatory blends cosmic history with beautiful bushland.
There are wedding venues… and then there are places where you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the universe. Mount Stromlo’s old observatory destroyed in the 2003 bushfires, just outside Canberra, is one of those places.
Originally built in 1924 and tragically damaged by bushfires in 2003, the ruins of the original observatory now serve as a breathtakingly atmospheric backdrop for open-air wedding ceremonies. With a mix of science, history, and natural beauty, Mount Stromlo offers something rare: a setting that feels both grand and grounded, timeless and personal.
My Experience Here
I had the privilege of marrying Mikaela and Dillon here on April 24, 2024, in a small, intimate elopement ceremony with 16 of their nearest and dearest.
“Josh, our celebrant, was fantastic, passionate and demonstrated a deep commitment to ensuring we had the perfect moment to celebrate us… He gave a beautiful speech about love and marriage and moved aside at various moments throughout the ceremony to allow us to have our moment together, and make it so beautiful and personal. It was the most perfect day and we cannot stop talking about it, and neither can our families…”
— Mikaela & Dillon
The old observatory itself made for a stunning ceremony location — surrounded by bushland, open skies, and the sense of standing on sacred scientific ground. As the light shifted into golden hour, the portraits taken in the ruins and on the surrounding lawns were simply next level.
Venue Highlights
- The original Mount Stromlo Observatory ruins create a dramatic and historic ceremony space
- Surrounded by native bushland and panoramic views over Canberra

- A peaceful and private setting that feels worlds away (but is only a short drive from town)
- Great for intimate elopements and small weddings with a deep sense of meaning
Planning Tips
- 🛏 Accommodation: Stay in Canberra — it’s nearby and full of great hotel options
- 🚗 Transport: Ubers and taxis can access the venue, but parking on-site is limited, so plan accordingly
- 🌇 Best time of day: Late afternoon or golden hour ceremonies work beautifully here — sunset views from the ridge are magical
- ✨ Night weddings? Not ideal — while stargazing fits the venue’s legacy, it’s not lit for evening events
- 📸 Photography: The surrounding ruins and mountain backdrop are made for creative photos — bring a photographer who knows how to use light and shadow
- 💡 Theme or styling ideas: Minimalist florals work well here — let the space speak for itself. Or lean into the astronomy vibe with celestial details and a cosmic colour palette
If you’re a couple who dreams under stars, loves a bit of quiet grandeur, or just wants to say “I do” in a place unlike anywhere else, Mount Stromlo might just be your perfect orbit.
