Terrara House Estate is one of the South Coast’s most beloved wedding venues, and for good reason. Established in 1860, this heritage property sits on 17 acres right in the heart of the Shoalhaven — just 15 minutes from Berry, 20 minutes from the white sand beaches of Jervis Bay, and a scenic two-hour drive from Sydney.

What makes Terrara special is the combination of history, space, and experience. This isn’t a venue that just hosts your wedding — it becomes your home for the weekend. With exclusive hire, on-site accommodation, a swimming pool, tennis court, and a concierge service that can organise everything from vineyard tours to beach trips, it’s a genuine destination experience on the NSW South Coast.

Is This Venue Right for You?

Best for: Couples who want a true weekend-away wedding with everything in one place. Terrara is ideal for celebrations of 60–150 guests who want more than a ceremony and reception — they want an experience. The on-site accommodation, concierge service, pool, tennis court, and pizza oven mean you can host a rehearsal dinner, the wedding itself, and a recovery brunch without anyone needing to leave the property.

The vibe: Relaxed luxury with heritage soul. This isn’t a stuffy country estate — it’s the kind of place where you swim in the pool the morning of your wedding, fire up the pizza oven for a casual Friday night dinner, and then walk into a beautifully styled ceremony the next day. It’s polished but never pretentious, with real warmth and a family-home feeling that puts everyone at ease.

Getting there: About 2 hours south of Sydney CBD via the Princes Highway, or a scenic route through Kangaroo Valley and the Southern Highlands. Sydney Airport (SYD) is the nearest major airport at around 2–2.5 hours. The drive down is pleasant, but organise transport for the evening — there are limited taxis in the area.

Where guests stay: 28 guests can sleep on-site — 20 in the main House across 23 rooms, and 8 in The Stables. This is one of the best on-site accommodation setups of any NSW venue. For remaining guests, Berry (15 min) is the standout option with boutique hotels, B&Bs, and Airbnbs in a beautiful village setting. Nowra (10 min) has more budget-friendly motels and hotels.

Nearby amenities: This is one of the best-located venues on the South Coast for guest activities. Berry (15 min) is a charming village with excellent cafes, restaurants, and shops. Jervis Bay (20 min) has some of Australia’s whitest sand beaches. Kangaroo Valley (30 min) offers bushwalking and river activities. The on-site concierge can coordinate all of this for your guests — vineyard tours, beach trips, golf, bushwalks — making it genuinely easy to turn your wedding into a destination weekend.

Weather & Seasonal Guide

The Shoalhaven has a mild coastal climate with warm summers and cool (but not cold) winters. It gets more rainfall than Sydney, particularly in summer.

  • Summer (Dec–Feb): Warm days averaging 25–28°C, with February the wettest month (~125mm across 12 rainy days). Humidity can be high. Summer is peak season for the South Coast — your guests can combine your wedding with a beach holiday at Jervis Bay. Late afternoon/evening ceremonies avoid the heat.
  • Autumn (Mar–May): Excellent wedding weather. Days around 20–24°C dropping to 15–18°C by May. Rainfall eases off, humidity drops, and the light is beautiful. March can still see summer storms, but April–May are reliably pleasant.
  • Winter (Jun–Aug): Mild compared to inland venues. Days around 15–17°C, nights 7–8°C. Rainfall at its lowest (~49mm in July). The estate is quieter, the gardens are still green, and Chesters reception venue feels intimate and warm. A good option for couples who want a smaller, atmospheric celebration at lower cost.
  • Spring (Sep–Nov): Fresh, green, and increasingly warm. Days climbing from 18°C to 24°C. The gardens come alive with new growth. October–November is a sweet spot — warm enough for outdoor ceremonies, before the summer humidity kicks in.

The key thing to know: The South Coast can get summer storms that blow in quickly from the coast. Have a wet weather plan — the estate’s indoor spaces handle it well, and a rainy ceremony under cover at a heritage estate has its own charm.

Planning Tips

  • Capacity: Up to 100 seated in Chesters, or up to 150 with a marquee. Perfect for mid-sized celebrations.
  • Exclusive hire: You get the entire estate — rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, and recovery brunch all in one place.
  • Guest activities: The concierge can organise vineyard visits, Jervis Bay beach trips, bushwalks, golf, and more.
  • Transport: Two hours from Sydney. Organise guest buses for the evening, especially if guests are staying in Berry or Nowra.
