The Convent is a true Hunter Valley classic in Pokolbin — a dreamy wedding venue wrapped in vineyards, manicured gardens, heritage buildings, and next-level food and wine.

Whether you’re having a celebration for 150 or something more intimate, there’s a feeling here: elegant, warm, and welcoming. It’s a full weekend experience if you want it to be, with ceremony, reception, and accommodation all on-site.

My Experience Here

I last officiated a wedding as a Sydney celebrant here for Daniel and Kathleen at Circa 1876, and their kind words have stayed with me:

“In all seriousness, Josh you conducted the most incredible ceremony for us. We had a lot of comments after about you, and how did I find you and how amazing you are! The ceremony is the most important part of the day, and we wouldn’t have had anyone else there marrying us.”

It’s a venue that lets the ceremony shine without feeling like an afterthought. I especially love the garden at Circa 1876 — a serene, green spot that’s both intimate and grand.

Venue Highlights

  • Gorgeous garden ceremony spaces, including Circa 1876 Gardens and the Convent Fountain
  • Three reception options: Circa 1876, Circa Alfresco, and Restaurant Eighty Eight
  • Award-winning “unbuttoned fine dining” menus from onsite kitchen gardens
  • Onsite accommodation for couples and guests — just steps from the party
  • Professional, warm venue staff and excellent coordination
  • Picture-perfect photography locations across the estate
  • Located in the heart of Australia’s premier wine region, just 2 hours from Sydney

Planning Tips

  • Best seasons: Spring and autumn in the Hunter Valley are magic. That said, a winter wedding here can feel warm and cosy too.
  • Sunset: Golden hour in the gardens hits just right — talk to your photographer about ceremony timing.
  • Transport: Encourage guests to stay nearby and organise a return shuttle or bus to the venue. Parking is limited and it keeps things safe and social.
  • Accommodation: Get the bridal party staying onsite. It removes stress and adds to the experience.
  • Catering: Circa 1876 delivers unforgettable food and wine — don’t skimp here, it’s a highlight.
  • Coordination: The Convent offers their own coordinator, but you’re welcome to bring your own planner if you want more hands-on support.
  • Wet weather: A solid wet weather backup is included — rare and very welcome.
