Caledon Estate sits on the slopes above Richmond, with vines tucked among native gum trees and views across the Coal River Valley towards kunanyi / Mount Wellington. The cellar door brings timber, sandstone from the property and big windows together: a place where the landscape is part of the celebration, even when you head inside.

For a wedding close to Hobart, it offers a country setting with Richmond nearby for accommodation and a wander around the village. You can build the day around a smaller seated meal or a larger cocktail reception, with the vineyard and valley as your backdrop.

Weddings at Caledon

Caledon’s September 2026 wedding brochure, available through its wedding information page, sets out these cellar-door configurations:

  • Southern wing: 28 seated guests with the existing furniture, or 32 with hired furniture.
  • Whole venue: 48 seated guests with the existing furniture, or 64 with hired furniture.
  • Cocktail reception: 40–100 guests standing, with some seating available.

The brochure requires a wedding planner or stylist, with a preferred list available from the venue. Its packages include exclusive venue use from 9am to 11pm, beverage staff, glassware, a commercial kitchen, a fireplace and coach and car parking. The functions chef can arrange seated menus or canapés.

Treat those numbers as a starting point for a conversation about your layout. Confirm the current package, catering, minimum wine spend and furniture hire with Caledon Estate. Site visits are by appointment; contact hello@caledonestate.com.au to arrange one.

Getting here from Hobart, the airport and Richmond

The address is 332 Prossers Rd, Richmond TAS 7025. These are approximate driving distances and sensible travel allowances to help plan guest transport:

Starting pointDistance by roadAllow to drive
Hobart city centre30–35 km35–45 minutes
Hobart Airport20–25 km25–35 minutes
Richmond village / bridge4–5 kmAbout 10 minutes

Distances are rounded route estimates, and your starting point, traffic and the approach to the cellar door will affect the trip. Destination Southern Tasmania quotes around 30 minutes from the city and 20 minutes from the airport; the allowances above leave a little more room for wedding-day travel. Airport times exclude baggage collection and hire-car pickup.

Open driving directions to Caledon from your accommodation before setting the run sheet. For guests staying in Hobart, a pre-booked return bus keeps the evening straightforward. Confirm coach access, pickup arrangements and the final departure time with the venue and your driver.

Richmond is the closest village base; Hobart gives guests a city stay with a longer transfer. Caledon’s brochure lists nearby accommodation including A Cottage in Richmond, Aquila Eco Retreat and Daisy Bank Richmond. Check availability directly and book transport alongside the rooms.

Climate and ceremony planning

This is a cool-climate vineyard, so plan for a warm layer even when the afternoon looks sunny. As a regional guide, Bureau of Meteorology records for Hobart Airport West show average summer daytime maximums around 21–23°C, with overnight minimums around 11–12°C. Winter daytime maximums average 13°C, with overnight minimums around 4–5°C. Those are long-term airport averages from 1958–2022, not measurements at Caledon’s hillside site or a forecast for your date.

  • Summer: plan shade, drinking water and sun protection for an outdoor ceremony, then a jacket for the evening. Check sunset timing with your photographer before choosing portrait and dinner times.
  • Autumn and spring: allow for cool starts, changing temperatures and wind. Keep wraps handy and give your ceremony setup a sheltered alternative.
  • Winter: favour an earlier ceremony and discuss indoor comfort, heating and a short outdoor photo session with the venue.
  • Every season: agree on a rain and wind backup that fits your actual guest count, including who makes the call and when. Rain occurs throughout the year; check the local forecast close to the day.
