Piermont Retreat
A coastal wedding and elopement venue near Swansea, Tasmania, with a stone amphitheatre, seaside cottages and views across Great Oyster Bay.
Piermont feels a long way from the everyday. Stone cottages sit among trees beside Great Oyster Bay, with the Hazards on the horizon and a small amphitheatre tucked behind a line of cypress trees. Yet Swansea is only three kilometres away, and Piermont puts the drive from Hobart or Launceston at around an hour and a half.
For an elopement, that combination is lovely: somewhere that feels remote, with your cottage, ceremony and celebration in the one place.
A ceremony in the stone amphitheatre
I married Kaitlyn and Russell at Piermont in a September elopement planned by Britt and The Elopement Collective. They got ready together in their cottage, then walked hand in hand to the amphitheatre for their vows.
The curved stone seating and tall Mediterranean cypress trees give the ceremony space a sense of enclosure, while keeping you outside in the light and fresh air. Afterwards, the stone steps, gardens and cottages make it easy to wander off for photographs without leaving the property.
Omar of By The Wilde took the photographs on this page. You can see more of them, read the couple’s review and meet the rest of their team in Kaitlyn and Russell’s wedding gallery.
Staying and celebrating
Piermont’s stone and rammed-earth cottages, spa suites and residences face the bay. The original 1838 Homestead now houses the restaurant, where Mediterranean-style food draws on neighbouring farms, local fishers and Tasmanian wine. It is open to visitors as well as staying guests.
There is room to make a few days of it: private beaches, walking trails, kayaks, mountain bikes, a pool and tennis court are among the retreat’s facilities. Swansea is close by for a trip into town, and Piermont makes a coastal base for exploring the east coast.
The retreat’s story is part of its appeal. Piermont records that founder Rupert von Haniel-Niethammer planted more than 10,000 native trees, and welcomed the first guest in November 1995.
Planning a wedding or elopement at Piermont
Piermont’s wedding information, checked in October 2026, describes destination weddings for up to 60 people and a limited number of elopements for couples with up to four guests.
For elopements, the listed ceremony-only site fee is $500 for exclusive use of the amphitheatre for up to four hours. Accommodation, meals and the wedding team are separate arrangements. Piermont currently says its 2026 elopement calendar is fully booked; contact events@piermont.com.au for future availability and current inclusions.
If you are flying into Hobart, check your route and allow time for the drive before settling into your stay. For an outdoor ceremony, talk through wind, wet-weather options and access to the amphitheatre with your planner and the venue.
